When you meet Dr. Marilyn Williamson, you sense right away that she’s lived a life rich with meaning, adventure, and compassion. Born on October 30, 1935, in the heartland of Iowa, Dr. Williamson’s journey has been defined by a deep commitment to serving others—a thread that weaves through every chapter of her story.

Her first calling was in the world of nursing. As a Registered Nurse, Dr. Williamson spent years tending to the health and well-being of those in her care, providing comfort and skill in equal measure. But her passion for helping people didn’t stop there. Driven by a desire to support others through every kind of challenge, she pursued advanced studies and earned her PhD in Counseling from St. Mary’s College. With both expertise and empathy, she went on to become a Licensed Professional Counselor, guiding individuals with wisdom, warmth, and a steady hand. For Dr. Williamson, making a difference has always meant meeting people where they are and helping them find the strength to move forward.

Family has always been at the center of Dr. Williamson’s life. She is the proud mother of five children—Debi, Leisa, Neil, Dirk, and Wendy—each one a source of joy and pride. Her marriage to Neil Williamson III was marked by love, partnership, and a shared sense of duty. Neil, who served honorably in the United States military during the Vietnam War, became her husband in a ceremony that remains one of her most cherished memories: the two exchanged vows under the crossed sabres at the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, surrounded by tradition, honor, and hope for the future.

Dr. Williamson’s life has been filled with adventure as well as service. She’s traveled widely, collecting memories from Rome’s ancient streets, the landscapes of Germany, and the sun-kissed shores of Hawaii. In her younger days, she was as active as she was compassionate—competing in Junior Olympic swimming and diving competitions, working as a lifeguard, and participating in musical events that fed her love for the arts. Whether in athletics or the creative world, Dr. Williamson embraced each opportunity fully.

Her journey has always been anchored by faith. A devoted Catholic, Dr. Williamson credits her beliefs and values for sustaining her through life’s many seasons. Her spirituality is not just a private comfort, but a source of inspiration and strength for everyone around her.

Today, Dr. Williamson brings her wealth of experience and her generous spirit to the Renaissance Assisted Living community. Her wisdom, kindness, and stories enrich every day for those who have the good fortune to know her. We are truly blessed to celebrate Dr. Marilyn Williamson this month—a woman whose life is a testament to service, adventure, family, and unwavering faith.

If you’ve ever heard laughter drifting down the hall or found yourself in a friendly conversation that brightened your day, chances are Ethel Bump was nearby. Ethel has a talent for finding joy in the little moments and sharing it with everyone around her—her warmth is the kind that makes strangers feel like old friends.

Her love story is straight out of a novel, bold and a little bit daring. One whirlwind week after meeting Russell Bump, she knew she’d found her partner for life. The two eloped to Las Vegas, kicking off 28 years of marriage that she still remembers with a fondness that lights up her face. Ethel never misses a chance to share a story about Russell—though he’s passed on, he remains the love of her life, and their adventures together still bring a sparkle to her eyes.

Family is the heart of Ethel’s world. She beams when talking about her children, Shawn and Robert, and there’s a special pride in her voice when she mentions her four grandchildren—Bradley, Christopher, Brittany, and Gabriel. Her stories are full of laughter, milestones, and the kind of everyday moments that become family legends.

There’s an adventurous streak to Ethel, too. She’s wandered the streets of Hungary and explored the beauty of Germany, her curiosity always leading her to new experiences. Ask her about her travels and she’ll gladly share her favorite memories, from tasting new foods to making connections across cultures.

Life at Renaissance Assisted Living suits Ethel’s sociable nature. She’s rarely without company, always eager for a good conversation or a laugh with friends. When she wants a bit of quiet, you’ll find her puzzling over a jigsaw—her favorite way to keep her mind sharp. And if the subject of pets comes up, don’t be surprised if she pulls out a story or two about her beloved cats; her gentle spirit extends to every creature, big or small.

Ethel Bump’s life is stitched together with love, laughter, and a boundless curiosity for the world. She reminds us all to treasure our relationships and to approach each day with a little adventure in our hearts. We’re delighted to celebrate Ethel—a true friend, a loving mother and grandmother, and a cherished part of our Renaissance community.

The Power of Connection: Why Senior Living Is Good for the Mind and Heart

Social connection plays a powerful role in protecting mental and emotional well-being as we age, yet it is often one of the first things to fade when seniors live alone. Changes in health, mobility or daily routine can make it harder to stay socially engaged, leading many older adults to experience isolation without realizing it. Moving into a senior living community like Renaissance Assisted Living of Greene County can be a meaningful step toward restoring connection, purpose and a sense of belonging as well as a means to keeping the mind sharp.

One of the greatest benefits of senior living is the built-in opportunity for daily interaction. Instead of relying on occasional visits or scheduled outings, residents are surrounded by peers and team members who become part of everyday life. Shared meals, group activities and casual conversations create natural moments of connection that help seniors feel less alone and more emotionally supported. Friendships formed often become deep and meaningful, offering comfort during both joyful and challenging moments.

Social engagement also supports mental sharpness and emotional resilience. Renaissance Assisted Living of Greene County offers structured programs such as musical events, games, classes and creative activities that encourage conversation and learning. These experiences help keep the mind active while providing excitement for the days ahead. For many seniors, having something to look forward to each day makes a meaningful difference in overall outlook.

For families, choosing senior living can bring peace of mind. Knowing a loved one is socially connected and emotionally supported eases concerns about loneliness and isolation. Families often notice positive changes after a move, including improved mood, increased engagement and a renewed sense of joy in their loved one’s daily life.

Ultimately, moving into a senior living community is not about giving something up. It is about gaining connection, companionship and support. By prioritizing social interaction and meaningful relationships, Renaissance Assisted Living of Greene County helps seniors protect their mental and emotional health while enjoying a fuller, more connected way of life.

After the busy holiday season, many seniors notice changes in energy levels, mobility or comfort, making the New Year a natural time for families to pause and consider what support will help their loved ones feel their best. New Year care focuses on thoughtful steps that nurture independence, confidence and quality of life throughout the year. For some seniors who may be feeling the effects of aging, a senior living community that emphasizes whole-person wellness, such as Renaissance Assisted Living of Greene County, can offer the right balance of support, connection and peace of mind for both residents and families.

One important part of New Year care is access to therapy services that help seniors maintain strength, balance and independence. Physical and occupational therapy can play a key role in improving mobility, supporting recovery and enhancing daily routines. At Renaissance, therapy services are coordinated with care teams, making it easier for residents to participate consistently and work toward goals that support long-term wellness.

Pain management is another essential focus as seniors begin the year. Chronic pain can affect more than just physical comfort; it can also impact mood, sleep and overall quality of life. Senior living communities take a comprehensive approach to pain management, combining medical oversight, therapy, movement and comfort-focused strategies. This collaborative care helps ensure concerns are addressed early, allowing residents to remain engaged and comfortable in their daily lives.

Staying active is a powerful way for seniors to support both physical and emotional well-being. Regular movement helps maintain flexibility, strength and balance while also encouraging social connection. At Renaissance Assisted Living of Greene County, residents have access to a variety of opportunities to stay active, from gentle exercise classes and walking groups to wellness programs designed to meet residents where they are. These activities are thoughtfully structured to be safe, enjoyable and empowering.

Equally important to physical care is the social connection that supports mental and emotional wellbeing. Renaissance offers daily opportunities for meaningful interaction, whether through shared meals, group activities, creative programs or simple conversations with neighbors and team members who truly know each resident. These moments of connection help reduce feelings of isolation, encourage a sense of belonging and bring joy to everyday life.

Renaissance Assisted Living resident Sarah Jane Mitchell was born on March 26, 1941, in Brightwood, Virginia. She grew up in a loving, happy home, where the simple joys of life set the foundation for the person she is today. Her family worked side by side, growing much of their own food and coming together each day to share meals made with care—nurturing the kindness, gratitude, and joy that define Sarah Jane’s spirit.

In this season of gratitude, peace, and joy, it feels especially fitting to introduce Renaissance Assisted Living of Greene County resident Jan Pelletier—a woman who brings all these gifts to everyday life.

The youngest of three, Jan grew up in Wharton, New Jersey, with two older brothers she loved dearly. To her large extended family, she’s the beloved “Aunt Jan,” and now, the circle has grown to include many grand-nieces and nephews who absolutely adore her.

Jan and her husband, Dave, have built a lifetime of memories together; at the center of their world is their daughter, Michelle, her husband Jeff, and two treasured granddaughters. “Spending time with these girls is the most important thing in life to Jan,” her family says. Whether it’s everyday adventures—grabbing a cup of coffee, going shopping, wandering in the Shenandoah—or bigger journeys like exploring Acadia National Park in Maine (a place very close to Jan’s heart), she savors it all. Nature’s beauty, from the grand views of the Blue Ridge mountains to the tiniest insects, never escapes her notice. It’s a joy and a gratitude Jan’s shared with her daughter and granddaughters, encouraging them to see the world with the same eyes. You’re likely to spot Jan outside on a walk, happily taking in the neighborhood’s sights, or simply appreciating the changing sky.

What truly sets Jan apart—and makes her such a gift to our community—is her deep ability to listen. Her years as a career counselor taught her how to encourage and coach, but it’s her beautiful, open heart that makes anyone she meets feel truly heard. Whether chatting with a fellow resident or checking in with team members, Jan has a knack for inviting people to share their stories—and delighting in them.

Jan’s sense of joy shines most brightly when she’s moving to music or immersed in creativity. She’s always up for a happy little dance or a quick twirl if there’s a great tune playing in the background. She spends many contented hours with her nature coloring books, where her talent as an artist is as clear as her zest for life.

Ask anyone who knows her, and they’ll tell you: Jan Pelletier is a bright light. Her gratitude, warmth, and gentle spirit inspire everyone fortunate enough to cross her path—and we’re grateful for her every single day.

Caring for Seniors During the Holidays: Why You Shouldn’t Wait to Make the Move

The holiday season is often filled with family gatherings, joyful traditions and meaningful moments—but for many families caring for an aging loved one, it can also be one of the most stressful times of the year. As routines change and days get busier, meeting the needs of aging parents or grandparents can become more complex, leaving family caregivers feeling stretched thin. While many families consider senior living as a helpful next step, they often hesitate to make the transition before the holidays. Common concerns include the fear that a loved one will feel lonely or abandoned, the worry it will disrupt the season and family traditions, or bring judgment from family and friends. But for many families, waiting may actually increase stress for both seniors and caregivers rather than ease it.

In reality, moving into a senior living community before the holidays can be one of the most supportive decisions a family can make. At Renaissance Assisted Living of Greene County, the holidays are filled with festive events, warm social connections and compassionate team members who help residents feel at home quickly. Rather than spending the season stressed and exhausted, families can share more meaningful, quality time together—free from the pressures of caregiving tasks and safety concerns. Renaissance encourages visits, whether it is at their community or at home for Christmas dinner. Instead of a disruption, the move often brings relief, stability and more joy to everyone involved.

The holidays can also highlight areas where a senior needs additional support: increased confusion in busy environments, difficulty navigating crowded gatherings and challenges with mobility often become more noticeable this time of year. Renaissance Assisted Living of Greene County is trained to meet these needs in a way that keeps the season enjoyable. For those with limited mobility, communities offer accessible events, transportation assistance, and safe, thoughtfully designed spaces—ensuring seniors can still participate in the traditions they love. For residents living with Alzheimer’s or dementia, structured activities, sensory-friendly celebrations and predictable daily routines help prevent overstimulation and confusion. These specialized supports help families worry less and give seniors a safer, more comfortable holiday environment.

Christmas-time is already hectic, and many caregivers are already juggling managing medications, preparing meals, assisting with personal care and coordinating doctor’s visits. By moving a loved one into a community before the holiday rush, caregivers gain the gift of rest. Rather than carrying the full weight alone, they can rely on a team of trained professionals who are available around the clock. This relief allows caregivers to enjoy holiday moments more fully—sharing stories over dinner, watching favorite movies together or simply being present without the pressure of caregiving.

It’s also important to remember that the transition into senior living doesn’t erase family traditions—it often enhances them. Families can decorate their loved one’s new apartment together, bring treasured holiday recipes to share or join community events designed to include residents and their families. If your family has been considering senior living but putting it off until the new year, this season may actually be the perfect time to make the move. With compassionate care, festive community life and support tailored to each resident’s needs, Renaissance Assisted Living of Greene County can help bring peace, comfort and joy to your loved one and to you.

Step into any gathering today at Renaissance Assisted Living of Greene County, and you’ll notice Alberta Grubb—not just for her impeccable style, but for the way she brings people together. Alberta has a gentle touch, always making time to check on neighbors, offer a word of encouragement, or simply share a quiet moment with someone who needs it. Her kindness is less a grand gesture and more a steady rhythm—small acts that make a big difference.

With her background as a hairdresser, Alberta’s passion for beauty shines through. She’s always put together, every outfit thoughtfully chosen, her hair and makeup perfectly in place. Yet there’s no fuss or flash about her—just a sense that she cares, both about herself and those around her.

Alberta finds joy in good company and simple pleasures. She loves to settle outside on a sunny day, letting the warmth linger while chatting with friends. People naturally gravitate to her—drawn by the comfort of her presence, but also by her attentive ear and easy sense of humor. She remembers birthdays, asks after family, keeps little traditions alive that make each day sweeter.

Though her beloved husband is now gone, their 55 years together live on in her stories and the gentle hope she shares. Her daughters, Suzanne and Jan, are proof of a life built on love and care that stretches far beyond Alberta herself.

Renaissance Assisted Living of Greene County has partnered with Viking Pure Solutions, a leader in non-toxic cleaning technologies, to bring innovative, hospital-grade cleaning and disinfecting to our community. Viking Pure installs on-site systems that generate powerful cleaning and disinfecting solutions using only salt, water, and electricity. This process creates electrolyzed water: a safe, fragrance-free, and highly effective alternative to conventional chemicals.

Their disinfectant is EPA-registered as hospital grade and proven to kill bacteria, fungi, and viruses, including norovirus and COVID-19, without the risks associated with harsh chemicals.

Born on a crisp November day in 1939 in Culpeper, Virginia, Dorothy Lewis has lived a life marked by dedication, joy, and a heart wide open to others.

For 38 years, Dorothy poured her energy and care into her role as a records clerk at the Federal Reserve Bank. Her commitment wasn’t just about the job—it was about the quiet impact of reliability and hard work that left a lasting impression on everyone around her.

But Dorothy’s story isn’t confined to the office walls. Her adventurous spirit has carried her across the globe and around the country, with cherished memories from Germany’s historic streets, the sun-soaked beaches of Hawaii, the heartland of Missouri, and the wide-open skies of Texas.

What truly defines Dorothy, though, is her servant’s heart. Always ready with a helping hand or a comforting word, she brings light and laughter wherever she goes. Her deep love for worship and singing hymns fills the air with a sense of peace and inspiration, touching the lives of many who share in her faith.

And don’t let her gentle nature fool you—Dorothy loves to dance. Whether it’s a lively tune or a quiet melody, her energy and laughter have a way of making any room come alive. She has a gift for making everyone feel at home with her warm smile and genuine kindness.

Dorothy’s presence at Renaissance Assisted Living of Greene County is a daily blessing. Her sweet soul and joyful spirit remind us all that kindness and faith are the threads that weave a strong, loving community. She’s cherished not just for the life she’s lived but for the love she shares every day.

Emily Shotwell is the kind of person who makes you feel instantly at home. Her smile is the first thing you notice—bright, genuine, and quick to appear. Spend a few minutes with her, and you’ll understand why everyone at Renaissance Assisted Living of Greene County looks forward to crossing her path. Emily’s laughter bubbles up easily, and she’s always ready with a witty comeback or a story that leaves you grinning.

Emily’s story begins in the small, spirited town of Madison, Virginia, where she was one of seven siblings in a house that never ran short on love or laughter. Those early years shaped her outlook: family first, kindness always, and there’s no such thing as too much fun around the dinner table.

Hard work has always been Emily’s way. After graduating from Madison County High School, she poured her heart into raising her own two daughters and spent an incredible forty years nurturing children as a Home Daycare Provider. Her love—steady, patient, and overflowing—has touched generations, including her grandchildren, who are the apples of her eye.

Emily is no stranger to adventure, either. She’s wandered the beaches of Hawaii, marveled at Arizona’s canyons, soaked in Maine’s sea breezes, and stretched out under Florida’s sun. Every trip gave her new stories, but her heart is happiest at home—tending her garden, sharing a home-cooked meal, and sipping a Club Soda or Ginger Ale on the porch.

She’s got a legendary sweet tooth (cookies, ice cream, pie—you name it, she’s game!) and a soft spot for the drama of soap operas and the fun of game shows. She still loves to reminisce about growing up on a farm, where she never shied away from hard work or muddy boots.

Faith is the steady thread in Emily’s tapestry. A lifelong Rose Park United Methodist Church member, she’s never missed a Sunday and now treasures attending services with her daughter and joining Bible studies at Renaissance. Her mornings start with a cozy cup of decaf tea or coffee, a little local news, and a lot of heart.

To know Emily is to be reminded of the joy that comes from a life steeped in love, laughter, and a healthy dash of adventure. She’s more than a resident—she’s the warmth in our halls and the sunshine in our days. We are so grateful for Emily Shotwell, whose heart is as generous as her smile is bright.

They conduct training through in-person sessions at each facility every 6-7 months to accommodate new hires and foster ongoing development. To reinforce key principles, SERVE posters are displayed in team member areas, serving as daily reminders of the commitment to excellence.
